We review the past Grand National results. Below we give a brief summary of the result and story of the race with a link to the full big-race review and story of that particular year.
Grand National Result 2012
Neptune Collonges (33/1) gave trainer Paul Nicholls a first victory in the race that had eluded him for so long when beating Sunnyhillboy by the width of a cigarette paper. Jockey Daryl Jacob proved his critics wrong when riding the perfect race to grab the biggest prize in National Hunt racing. Katie Walsh showed she was the woman for the job when an admirable third on her dad Ted's Seabass. While Cappa Bleu ran a stormer in fourth for Welsh handler Evan Williams. One sour note was the death of Gold Cup hero Synchronised who suffered a fatal fall at the 6th fence under Tony McCoy.

Ballabriggs (14/1), ridden by Jason Maguire, landed the 2011 Grand National and proven that Aintree is in former trainer Ginger McCain's family blood. After the heroics of multiple winner Red Rum, and his Amberleigh House, Ginger's son Donald proved anything his Dad could do he could do too. Ballabriggs' success was richly deserved for the latest trainer in what may become a legendary line of handlers. It was a first Grand National for Jason Maguire, who used all of his strength to force his mount home by a couple of lengths from Oscar Time.

Don't Push It was a heavily backed 10/1 joint-favourite winner. It was also the horse that gave him his first elusive win in the Grand National. Not only that, McCoy subsequently won Sports Personality of the Year 2011 for which he was an odds-on favourite! Amazingly it also meant trainer Jonjo O'Neill had trained the winner of the Liverpool spectacular, so Don't Push It must have been some horse. The JP McManus owned winner was chased home by Black Apalachi with trainer Evan Williams' fragile old favourite State of Play in third.

Mon Mome did the bookies a favour when obliging at 100/1 for handler Venetia Williams. Despite the odds this was no Foinavon. He was in the handicap proper (so the official handicapper thought he had as fair a chance as any) and had started favourite for the Welsh National earlier in the season. He had been 10th the previous year at 28/1. You knew when the BBC racing's ignorant rent-a-gob Gary Wiltshire started saying none of the outsiders could win it would be their day. Previous winner Comply Or Die was a valiant runner-up.

Comply Or Die won a first Grand National for handler David Pipe and jockey Timmy Murphy. The yard had tasted Aintree victory before though as Pipe's squeaky dad Martin had been successful with 'comedian' Freddie Starr's Miinnehoma (1994). It was a bad result for the bookies as the admirable gelding started 7/1 favourite and, by some margin, was the most heavily punted of the 40 runners. Irish trained Kings John Castle was runner-up for billionaire owner, former bookie and current currency trader JP McManus, who was to land the race with Don't Push It in 2010.

Silver Birch (33/1) landed the race for rookie Irish trainer Gordon Elliott. Nobody had heard of him before the race but by the evening Elliott was world famous. Silver Birch had been a high class chaser for trainer Paul Nicholls before being flogged on vets' advice for 20,000 Guineas at Doncaster sales. Elliott set about proving the medical world wrong subjecting the horse's fragile legs to stem cell treatment. The reward for his patience came in the UK's most high profile race.
