Grand National Race Report 2009

Trainer Venetia Williams became only the second woman, after Jenny Pitman, to land the Grand National when her MON MOME scored at betting odds of 100-1.

Mon Mome ran away from his field to land the Grand National by twelve lengths under his jockey Liam Treadwell, having his first ride in the race. Fearless rider Liam Treadwell showed the more experienced jockeys how to ride Aintree by hugging the inside all the way around.

Mon Mome was the the biggest-odds winner since 1967 when Foinavon won his famous Grand National after carnage at one fence.

Runner up was the 2008 Grand National winner, Comply Or Die, who ran a huge race off a 15lb higher mark than the previous year. Comply Or Die was given a safety-first ride by Timmy Murphy who kept on the wide outside from the start.

Butler's Cabin, ridden by Champion jockey Tony McCoy started as Grand National favourite at 7/1 but came a distant seventh.

The Grand National nearly started in chaos after two false starts, typical of the amateur way the race has been started in the past.
