The 2007 Grand National hero Silver Birch is injured and misses this season’s race. Irish trainer Gordon Elliott has been forced to miss the entire season with his Aintree star. As low as 20/1 for the 2008 Grand National, Silver Birch has damaged a leg. The trainer, who won the Grand National last season in his rookie year and before he had trained a winner in his native country, said: “Silver Birch badly knocked himself and we have to give him a year on the sidelines. It is not too bad but we don’t want to rush him back.” Silver Birch has a history of leg problems. Current connections picked him up for the bargain basement price of 20,000 guineas from Paul Nicholls after vets had advised the champion trainer get shot of the 2004 Welsh National victor. Nicholls must have been ruing that ill-founded advise as Silver Birch passed the post at Liverpool last season.
