Mon Mome runs superb National trial in Gold Cup

No.1 online bookie for Grand National betting

Mon Mome, who won last season's Grand National at 100/1, is now one tenth of those odds with most bookies to land the 2010 Grand National. But Bet365 is offering the best price of 11/1 (non-runner no bet).

Mon Mome's betting odds contracted after his excellent staying on third behind Imperial Commander in The Cheltenham Gold Cup.

His trainer Venetia Williams feels Mon Mome is now very well handicapped to win the National a second time. "Its fortunate that the handicapper can not adjust the weights for Aintree now or Mon Mome would be going up higher in the handicap after his amazing run in the Gold Cup. I felt he could steal a place but that run was fantastic."

Denman for Aintree next year? Loadsa money!

Mon Mome was third in the Gold Cup and of course Denman filled the runner-up spot with favourite Kauto Star a faller. Denman's loud-mouthed part-owner Harry Findlay is trying to pressurise the trainer and his co-owner into running Denman in The Grand National 2011.

Flash Findlay's star ran in snatches in the Gold Cup and, despite some prodigious leaps (a sign he was not measuring his fences efficiently), jumped as if he had lost some of his confidence. That was little surprise as he had parted company with his jockey on his previous run.

The fickle connections of Denman have been proved wrong to 'jock off' Sam Thomas who was on board for Denman's epic Gold Cup triumph two seasons ago. The horse has looked very fallible on occasion even with A P McCoy up (and down). The racing press in the UK is notoriously wet when it comes to criticism within the industry, but the treatment these fickle, greedy owners meted out to Thomas was a disgrace.

Now the calls for Denman, whose jumping fell apart in his previous outing, from rotund Findlay smell of greed. Cockney Findlay shouted: "I think Denman will run in the Grand National. If he's not a National horse then I'm blind."

You better get to Specsavers, Harry. The Grand National will not only test Denman's now fragile confidence, but Findlay forgets the big race is a handicap. Denman will be top weight and giving weight to all, including real Aintree specialists. It must be heavy odds-on that Denman comes a cropper in the Grand National, even if he stays the trip. After all, Denman was outstayed in The Gold Cup by a horse in Imperial Commander that Flash Harry thought couldn't stay the trip!

The only happy outcome of Denman's ultimate retirement (if grasping connections ever do let him rest), will be to get Harry 'Five Bellies' off our TV screens!
