Cheveley Grand purchase Character Building for Codd

No.1 online bookie for Grand National betting

POOR Jamie Codd, the amateur rider who was dreaming of Grand National glory aboard the 20-1 shot with a big shout Character Building, has lost the ride.

Now Codd will have to do some 'character building' of his own to overcome the disappointment. Codd lost the mount as a result of a change of ownership when David and Patricia Thompson made an offer that was impossible to refuse for trainer John Quinn's stable star.

Character Building, upon instructions of the new owners, will now be ridden by a professional. However the name of the lucky jockey has yet to be finalised. It is tough luck on Codd but hardly surprising as the owners seek to repeat the coup they pulled with the late, great Party Politics in 1992.

The multi-millionaires bought Party Politics just 3 days before the Grand National and the huge steeplechaser carried pro jockey Carl Llewellyn to victory at Aintree. Now they are aiming for history to repeat itself.

Mr and Mrs Thompson are as shrewd as they are wealthy and punters could take the purchase of Character Building as a big tip for the big race. But, when it comes to racing, the Thompsons, who own the famous Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket, prefer to play on the Flat. They stand the super-sire Pivotal, who was a 5f-sprinter and never jumped a twig in his illustrious career.

Character Building has the form to land the big one. He has never fallen, has been laid out for the Grand National and won the Kim Muir Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last year.
